Wim Hof: The Iceman Who Teaches People to Be Healthier and Mentally Resilient

Hanging 2,000 meters above the ground with just one finger, running a marathon through the Arctic Circle in temperatures of about -20 °C in shorts, sandals and drinking a beer, or staying in an ice tank for almost two hours? There seems to be no boundaries of the human mind for Wim Hof.

Perhaps thanks to his incredible achievements and worldwide awareness of the benefits of hardening, breathing exercises, and  mind-setting, the ranks of his supporters and followers are skyrocketing. His popularity is also evidenced by the unprecedented media interest, with the well-known ice man appearing on Discovery Channel’s Superhuman Showdown and being targeted by the lifestyle platform Vice or the BBC as part of a documentary about the method he teaches around the world.

Wim Hof’s method, in the words of the IceMan himself, should soon become the subject of scientific research in relation to improving mental health

His popularity and hunger for information, which he is happy to  pass on, is also evidenced by the fact that he is a frequent guest on a number of popular podcasts. He has appeared, for example, with the popular visionary, entrepreneur and experimenter Tim Ferris, the ultra-persistent Rich Roll, and the legendary Joe Rogan, where he mentions that he wants to direct his research into improving mental health. Possible benefits can even surpass the results of scientifically proven mindfulness. His interest in helping people with mental health problems stems from a tragic life event when his depressed wife Olaya committed suicide in 1995 when she jumped from the 8th floor of the apartment building where they lived together. Wim from one day to the next suddenly had to take care of the four children they had together. It was the hardening that soon became part of the Wim Hof method that helped him come to terms with the event.

Wim Hof appeared in a John Newman’s music video and was also invited to work with Burnley Football Club

British singer James Newman also invited Wim Hof to collaborate on the video. In 2020, they co-starred in a video for Newman’s song, My Last Breath.

His know-how in the form of the Wim Hof Method, which he passes on to people all over the world in the form of online or offline courses, is still craved by many, as evidenced by Wim Hof’s association with FC Burnley, a football club in the English Premier League.

Wim Hof’s method of combining breathing exercises, cold  therapy and mindset work is intended to help you achieve:

  • a better sleep,
  • lower stress levels,
  • improve immunity,
  • increase energy levels for both everyday and sporting life
  • and accelerate regeneration.

Wim Hof, with his body, can do things that until now have been considered impossible.

But this ice superman is no esoteric, though many of his  experiments and records sound more like from another planet. However, scientific research says otherwise, even if there are still many things to be confirmed or disproved. He had recently managed to literally rewrite the physiology textbook by using his method to influence the autonomic nervous system and regulate the body’s immune response, which until then had been considered impossible. But that’s who he is, doing things that others say are impossible. [1]
